Ehud Halevy being punched by police |
Jews in Crown Heights will protest police brutality after a recent beating of a Jewish homeless man in a community shelter, according to reports.
A “Justice for Ehud” campaign began on Thursday with plans for a demonstration on Friday. Anger is escalating over the apparent police beating of a Jewish man in Crown Heights earlier this month.
Friends of Ehud Halevy, 21, started a Facebook page promoting the protest on Friday and launched a Change.org petition asking the District Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn to dismiss the charges against him for assaulting two police officers in the October 8 incident.
“This is not the anger, it is rage,” said Barry sugar of the Jewish Leadership Council, which planned to join an expected crowd of 300 in front of the Jewish Children’s Museum on Eastern Parkway on Friday.
“The police department has been indifferent to the Jewish community,” Sugar said.
The protesters said they had no time to obtain a permit for the demonstration and is expecting an angry response if polices try to shut down their protest.
In a 71st Police Precinct Community Council meeting held Thursday night at the High School 61 in Crown Heights, Deputy Inspector John Lewis acknowledged that the police were aware of mounting anger over the incident.
“I know that many people are upset,” Lewis said, but denied that incidents like the one involving Halevy was common, saying: “If you’re here to tell me that there is a culture of police beatings, then I have to disagree.”
Officer Luis Vega, the police officer seen on video punching Halevy, has been placed on desk duty and his weapon was taken away, Lewis said.
