Police in Newport Beach, California, are investigating the murder of an Orange County doctor in an exam room by one of his own patients.

Dr. Ronald Gilbert, a urologist, was found shot to death in a patient exam room Monday afternoon. Police say callers said they heard seven or eight shots at about 2:45 PM. Gilbert was pronounced dead at the scene.

When police arrived eight minutes after the first call, they arrested a 75-year-old who was in the room where the shooting occurred. Police confirmed that the man was a patient of Dr. Gilbert, but said they are still investigating a possible motive.

The suspect, was identified as Stanwood Fred Elkus.

Newport Beach Police spokesperson Kathy Lowe, said that officers searched the house of Elkus and found evidence that could point to a possible motive, although the circumstances of the shooting remain unclear.

“It will be part of our ongoing investigation to determine the exact cause of this crime,” Lowe said.

The medical staff at Hoag Health Center, where the shooting occurred, were put under lockdown after the shooting, but the building reopened Tuesday.

Hoag President and CEO, Richard Afable, said in a statement that Dr. Gilbert had been on staff there for nearly 20 years.

“He was admired, respected and loved by the family and will be missed deeply,” read the statement.

Elkus was held on $1 million bail, and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.
