The officials said on Monday that more than 50 gunmen attacked checkpoints “all over the city.”
The attacks began at around 2:00 a.m. local time on Monday (2300 GMT on Sunday).
Some of the attackers were dressed in Iraqi army uniforms and one of them was killed during gun battles with police officers.
Five other policemen were also injured, according to medical sources in Haditha.
Following the incident, a curfew has been imposed throughout the area.
In addition to the gun attacks on Monday, the gunmen killed three bodyguards at the houses of two senior Iraqi police officers in Haditha. The attackers also kidnapped the two officers.
The latest attacks in Haditha come one year after nine people, including three police officers, were killed and eight others were wounded in a bombing inside a bank in the city in March 2011.
