4 civilians killed E Ukraine clashes

At least four civilians have been killed in the east Ukrainian city of Donetsk as armed clashes between government troops and pro-Russian forces persist despite a still standing ceasefire.

Most of the fighting on Sunday was reportedly focused on the government-held airport in the city in violation of the truce that has officially been in effect since early September.

Nine others were also reported wounded by shrapnel during the armed skirmishes on Saturday and Sunday in the city, which remains a key stronghold of the pro-Russian forces.

A government military spokesman announced at a Sunday press briefing in Kiev that 13 Ukrainian servicemen had been wounded in the past 24 hours in fighting in east of the country.

The heavily-damaged airport in Donetsk is the last stronghold of Ukrainian government forces in Donetsk, which is firmly controlled by pro-Russian militiamen.

Armed clashes near the airport intensified toward the end of last week as European leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, discussed the crisis in Ukraine in Italy.

Putin and Poroshenko, however, did not achieve much progress in terms of adopting measures to halt the violence in east Ukraine.

The Ukrainian conflict began following a March referendum in which the residents of the Crimean Peninsula voted to break away from Ukraine and join Russia.

According to recent figures released by the United Nations, over 3,600 people have so far been killed in the skirmishes in east Ukraine.
