At least four foreign nationals have been killed in a bombing attack reportedly by a Taliban militant who blew himself up outside Kabul International Airport.
The bomber attacked a building of the airport used by anti-narcotics police on Tuesday while riding a motorcycle. The slain foreigners were anti-narcotics trainers and their nationalities are not clear yet. The attack also injured six others.
Afghan security forces said that the bomber was in Afghan intelligence police uniform at the time of the attack.
Meanwhile, Zabihulllah Mujahid, Taliban’s spokesman, said the militant group claimed responsibility for the attack. “In this successful attack, up to 15 invader soldiers were killed or wounded and many vehicles were damaged,” he claimed.
The military side of Kabul’s International Airport, which is home to Afghan and NATO-led forces, has been the scene of deadly attacks in recent days. On July 17, gunmen attacked the airport and occupied two buildings as a base to fire shots with automatic weapons and launch rocket-propelled grenades toward the airport.
The Taliban has vowed to increase attacks on Afghan forces and US-led troops, their bases, diplomatic missions and vehicle convoys before the drawdown of the US-led mission by the end of the year.
The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity remains despite the presence of tens of thousands of US-led troops.
