Unidentified gunmen have killed four people, including the mayor of a southern Philippine town, at the international airport of the capital, Manila.
The shooting took place on Friday outside Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s passenger terminal.
“The mayor and his family and some security escorts were attacked,” said Manila airport general manager Angel Honrado, adding that one of the dead was Ukol Talumpa, the mayor of Labangan town in the southern region of Mindanao.
Honrado said the mayor, his wife along with their bodyguards were shot at by at least two gunmen as they exited the passenger terminal.
The shooting also left four others injured, he said, adding that the mayor and his wife were among those killed.
Officials have not identified the gunmen and the motive behind the assault as they fled the scene on a motorcycle in the heavy late-morning traffic outside the terminal, Honrado stated.
“Government agencies are trying their best to determine the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
According to the official Philippines News Agency, Talumpa had previously survived an assassination attempt in November 2010 and a grenade attack in September 2012.
He was a member of the political opposition and won the election for mayor of Labangan last May.
