6-year-old US boy dies of gunshot wound

According to a local police official, Brandon Holt was pronounced dead at 5:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday, about 24 hours after the shooting took place in the town of Toms River.

The four-year-old shot his friend in the head at a distance of about 14 meters on Monday evening.

“The young boys were playing,” Toms River police chief Michael Mastronardy told a press conference earlier Tuesday. “The four-year-old went into the house, retrieved the rifle from within the house: a .22-caliber rifle.”

“A shot went out, and the six-year-old was struck in the head,” Mastronardy added.

The police chief said the whole community was affected by the “tragic” incident.

One of the neighbors said, “I’m sad for the children involved and their families, but I’m angry with whoever owns that gun and allowed a little child to get hold of it. A four-year-old can’t load a gun.”

The incident was the second fatal shooting in the United States in recent days that involves kids.

Police authorities said on April 8 that a four-year-old boy in the state of Tennessee shot and killed the wife of a sheriff’s deputy, using one of the loaded guns that he was showing off to a friend at his home.

The accidental shooting happened during a family cookout gathering while the 48-year-old victim, Josephine Fanning, and her husband, Wilson County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Fanning, were entertaining family and friends at the home in the city of Lebanon on April 6.

Nearly 600 people are killed each year in accidental shooting incidents in the United States, according to statistics by the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. Another 31,000 die of gunshot wounds each year.
