There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage following the quake that took place at 0858 GMT early Saturday.
The USGS added that the epicenter of the tremor was located 102 kilometers (63 miles) west of Craig, Alaska at a depth of nine kilometers (5.5 miles).
Meanwhile, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that the earthquake has caused a local and possibly devastating tsunami.
The center announced in a statement that “Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated,” adding, “It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter.”
“No tsunami threat exists for other coastal areas in the Pacific, although some other areas may experience small non-destructive sea-level changes lasting up to several hours,” the statement also said.
In October, 2012, a similar 7.7-magnitude quake jolted Canada’s Queen Charlotte Islands, which is located just south of the current epicenter.
