9 Serbs jailed for Kosovo war crimes

Serbia’s war crimes court has convicted nine former paramilitary members for 1999 massacre of more than 120 ethnic Albanian civilians during the Kosovo war.

The men were handed down by the court in Belgrade on Tuesday jail terms of between two and twenty years. In addition, two other members were acquitted.

The men, who were all members of the notorious “Jackals” group, was found guilty of brutal crimes committed in four villages in western Kosovo during the 1998-99 war, in which ethnic Albanians fought against Serbian rule.

“[The nine] committed murders, rapes and robberies in an extremely brutal way, with the main goal to spread fear among Albanian civilians in order to force them to leave their homes and flee to Albania,” said Judge Snezana Nikolic Garotic in her verdict.

The verdicts have been seen as too lenient by some observers and families of victims. The prosecutor’s office said it would appeal the two acquittals and ask for harsher punishment for some of the defendants.

The paramilitary group committed several crimes during the war including the massacre of 41 people in the village Cuska, in which villagers were separated between men and women. The male villagers were then locked up into houses, where they were shot and set on fire.

The crimes committed in Cuska and the three other villages were among the most brutal atrocities of the two-year conflict that killed some 13,000 people, mostly ethnic Albanians.

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008 and has received international recognition from around 100 countries. However, Serbia has refused to recognize Kosovo independence.
