Abbott says aged care will cost more

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says older people will pay more for services under the government’s new aged-care strategy.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Friday announced an overhaul of aged care, including more home-based care programs and means-testing for part-pensioners and self-funded retirees for residential care, with a cap on lifetime costs.

Mr Abbott told reporters in Brisbane that while he had not studied the government’s document in detail, he was concerned about higher costs for older people.

“The coalition supports a reform process in aged care, but one of the things you’ve always got to be conscious of with this government is announcements are often not quite what they seem,” he said.

“There is going to be a significant element of user pays and there is going to be significant additional use of means-testing.

“More users pays and more means tests means that a lot of Australians are going to pay more to use aged-care facilities then they have in the past.”

Mr Abbott accepted the system was under strain.
