About 700,000 refugees flee Syria: UN

The number of Syrians registered as refugees or awaiting processing in the surrounding countries reached 703,314 by the end of January 28, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced on Tuesday.

“We’ve had a huge push in the last few weeks. The needs are enormous,” UNHCR spokeswoman Sybella Wilkes said, noting the surge has made it impossible for the world body to “get to everyone fast enough.”

According to the UNHCR, some 170,000 Syrian refugees have been formally registered in Jordan while nearly 160,000 others have taken shelter in Lebanon.

Turkey, Iraq and Egypt are also hosting Syrian refugees.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

About four million Syrians rely on international assistance to cope with the fallout from the prolonged conflict.
