In a pediatric visit it’s hard to screen and balance profiles and illness prioritize support and resources for children in the short viists. During a new study released in JAMA Pediatrics 2400 children were documented to have parents who experienced depression or intimate partner violence and suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD as they grew in age. What the study showed was what some pediatricians had suspected all along.
Children showed signs of depression themselves by the age of pre-school and earlier.
The increase in ADHD and increase in drugs prescribed
Pediatricians have a responsibility to actively be on the lookout for children suffering is these kinds of domestic situations. Atlanta pediatrician and CNN Health expert Dr. Jennifer Shu said that depression and anxiety alone “Could be signs for mental health problems…which may also be linked to violence in the home.”
The study allows teachers, day care providers, and pediatricians identify a child in mental stress
Being able to identify a child in need allows the health practitioner and adult who spend time with the child full time while away from the parents to optimize the child’s wellness mentally and physically by providing support and other resources. Normally children who come from a violent home life lack proper sleep and nutrition and this can affect their ability to concentrate fully on school and other day time activities.
