(Scroll down for video) An advertisement for a cable company was deemed offensive to heavy women in Israel and was pulled from the airwaves, according to press reports in New York.
The advertisement for a cable company which featured Julia Louis-Dreyfus was pulled from Israeli television after angering a feminist group after insulting fat women.
The controversial television commercial for satellite company YES, shows Dreyfus approaching an overweight female co worker in the elevator and congratulating her on her pregnancy.
It turns out that the woman is not pregnant, leading Dreyfus to say jokingly, because obviously she has not dated anyone in a while.
“Made a mistake? Just fix it”, then viewers are told how to fix the mistake by signing up for cable and satellite by switching to YES.
But a women’s organization and the Yedid Association for Community Empowerment, launched a campaign to censor the advertisement.
In a formal complaint with the satellite provider, a representative of Yedid wrote: “There are a lot of people who are overweight in Israel who were treated in a disrespectful and hurtful way.”
“It is shocking to think that a company that depends on its customers, behaves so cheap and shameful,” Labour Party Minister of Parliament, Nachman Shai, told an Israeli newspaper. “I demand that the advertisement should be removed immediately from the air,” he added.
YES canceled the advertisement and offered an official apology.
“This was a humorous advertisement based on the style of the known actress, Julia Louis Dreyfus,” the company said in a statement.
“There was never any intention of disturbing the public in any way and if someone feels personally offended, we apologize for it,” the company added.
