Advisor blames ministers for NHS deaths

Jarman, who is working on a government review of 14 hospitals where mortality rates have been persistently higher than the national average, said in 2010 he sent a list of hospitals with high death rates to the then Health Secretary Andy Burnham which was ignored.

“There must be at least tens of thousands of avoidable deaths in those hospitals alone, when we should have been going in and we should have been looking at them,” said Jarman, talking about the hospital trusts under investigation.

This comes as a two-year inquiry into unnecessary deaths of hundreds of patients at Mid Staffordshire Trust, chaired by Robert Francis QC, found failings at “every level” of the NHS system.

Francis’s 1,782-page report called for a shake-up of health watchdogs as well as criminal charges against those instrumental in patients’ deaths by poor care and negligence.
