Afghans rally against alleged vote fraud

Supporters of Afghanistan presidential candidate, Abdullah Abdullah, have staged another round of street protests over allegations of fraud in the country’s presidential runoff.

Thousands of people including the former foreign minister, Abdullah, have taken to the streets in an anti-government demonstration in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Friday.

Abdullah has accused the government of manipulating the results in favor of his rival, former finance minister and World Bank official, Ashraf Ghani, who is reportedly well ahead in the vote count.

He has already dismissed the results as unacceptable, calling for an immediate halt in vote counting.

Evidence suggests that some ballot boxes were filled with votes a day before the runoff election, Abdullah says.

The presidential candidate has even alleged that the voter turnout was higher than the number of eligible voters in several provinces.

Abdullah has also withdrawn his monitors from the government’s Independent Election Commission (IEC).

Rallies in his support have so far been mostly peaceful.

Meanwhile, allegations of fraud have raised fears that Afghanistan could soon plunge into political chaos.

Zia-ul-Haq Amarkhail, head of the secretariat of the IEC resigned on June 23 after the team of presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah released recordings, accusing him of misdeeds in the transfer of unused ballots during the June 14 runoff poll.

On June 24, the United Nations said it will help broker a solution to Afghanistan’s election crisis, hosting talks between presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah and the election authority that he boycotted over alleged vote fraud.
