In its second season, Afia returns to the sustainable fashion scene with vibrant ethical fashion for Summer 2012. Made with colorful, printed Ghanian textiles hand-sourced by the designer from the markets of Accra, the ready-to-wear collection boasts limited edition styles that are on trend: think crop tops, short shorts, and peplum skirts. Plus, you can shop select pieces from the spring collection now at Afia’s online shop.

“The intention of this line was to make dynamic, fresh pieces while keeping the price point accessible,” designer Meghan Sebold said, according to the press release. “Sustainable fashion should be on-trend and attainable.” Prices average around $100 for a skirt and $200 for a dress.

Stand out pieces for summer 2012 include a colorful peplum skirt with a bright floral pattern. Thanks to the overskirt–or ruffle–the trend is flattering on a number of body types: it hides a tummy and creates a feminine silhouette. Also notable are Afia’s vibrant shorts, which are a summer staple that will always be on-trend.

Expanding on Afia’s signature use of vibrant Ghanian textiles for classic cocktail dresses–one of which I donned to the Audobon’s Women in Conservation Luncheon–are form-fitting crop tops and vests. These styles are great for right now for Afia’s young, urban clientele but are too trendy for long-term wear. A better bet–and bang for your buck–are they skirts, shorts, and dresses that Afia does so well.

Designer Meghan Sebold was driven to create Afia out of a desire to bring business to Ghana. “If I could translate these textiles into our styles then I could open them up to a bigger market,” Sebold told TreeHugger on the launch of her collection in May of last year. “I wanted Afia to be a progressive, social business.”
Afia works with the Dzidefo Women’s Cooperative in the village of Kpando, Ghana, where garments are cut and sewn.
