This largely Sunni area was the centre of the insurgency against American
forces during their presence in the country from 2003 until last year.
However, al-Qaeda was severely weakened from 2007 onwards when local people
turned against it, forming their own self defence units with the support of
the Baghdad government and US forces. Haditha had been relatively quiet,
with no serious incidents since a suicide bombing almost a year ago.
Al-Qaeda in Iraq is believed to have regrouped and partially recovered from
its setbacks. It may also have been responsible for recent suicide bombings
in Syria, where it has vowed to topple to President Bashar al-Assad’s
regime.
