Two sisters growing up in Bulgaria recall olive oil as being the foundation of life and the staple in their Mediterranean diet. After moving to California in 1999, Milena and Desi Bogdanova set out on a mission to provide the U.S. with a taste of their lifestyle. And in the beginning of 2011, the sisters began Oliovera, a socially good and environmentally friendly company specializing in certified extra virgin olive oils.
The sisters’ social venture was an opportunity to promote a healthy lifestyle while giving back to the community. And in doing so, Oliovera supports small businesses—all of the olive oils sold on their website are from private, family run olive farms throughout central and northern California. Each of the olive oils they choose to sell are certified through the California Olive Oil Counsel—labeled as one of the strictest counsels in the entire world—and go through yearly tests to keep their classification.
Aside from Oliovera’s partnerships with local, small businesses, the company is environmentally friendly. All of the glass bottles the company’s olive oil gets packaged in is made from 100 percent recycled glass. The company believes that in doing so they are striving to be a small force behind a cleaner planet.
Not only is Oliovera environmentally minded, they have partnered with Feed America— the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity—in which they are dedicated to helping America end hunger. For every bottle of olive oil sold, Oliovera provides five full, hot lunches to hungry children suffering throughout the U.S. As Oliovera continues to have a social impact, the sisters are committed to making a difference as they fight against obesity and hunger, which continues to plaque America. While their company’s plan is to promote healthy living, they said their focus is on the children.
They use Oliovera as a tool to help educate children on how to make healthy choices, provide them with nutritional information and continue to promote an active lifestyle through fresh recipes found on their blog and future educational partnerships with local organizations and schools. They believe that teaching the younger generation will help provide the resources needed to make healthy and productive decisions as adults.
But while the company’s impact is big, Oliovera’s focus is simple—olive oil and people.
