Despite warning about the risks of direct oral sucking of the circumcision wound, ultra-Orthodox Jews in New York continue with the dangerous practice. Now, two additional children were sickened as a result of the practice.

The two children have contracted the herpes virus after undergoing the ultra-Orthodox Jewish circumcision practice, which has been linked to the spread of the potentially deadly virus to newborn children, according to the New York City Health Department.

In the ritual, known as metzitzah b’peh, after removing the foreskin of the penis the person performing the procedure briefly puts his mouth to the wound, sucking a small amount of blood out, which is then discarded. Antibacterial ointment is applied and the wound is bandaged. The health department said that the procedure is dangerous because contact with the mouth can transmit diseases such as herpes.

Most adults are infected with herpes simplex virus type 1, and while they may not have symptoms, the virus can be present in saliva, according to the health department.

“Although HSV-1 infection in adults can cause the common cold sore, HSV-1 infection in newborns is very serious,” a statement from the department said.

Since 2000, there have been 13 reports in the city of New York of children contracting HSV-1, two of whom died from the virus. The Department of Health reported that about 20,493 children in New York were exposed to the practice in that period.
How many babies will become sick from the questionable ritual before action will be taken to stop this?” Rivka Friedman, 23, who is a mother to a newborn child in Brooklyn, New York told YourJewishNews.com.

While regular Jews practice circumcision as part of their religion, metzitzah b’peh is limited to a relatively small number of ultra-Orthodox Jews.
