Anti-monarchy protest held in Britain

In her speech to both Houses of Parliament, the Queen said the commemoration of her 60 years on the throne known as ‘Diamond Jubilee’ was a chance “to come together in a spirit of neighborliness and celebration”.

Anti-monarchy protesters and supporters of the campaign group Republic, which wants a “democratic alternative” to the monarchy, said there needed to be a debate about whether a hereditary institution was appropriate for the country in the 21st Century.

“The role of head of state is too important simply to be chosen by an accident of birth,” said Labour MP Katy Clark.

“It should not be a hereditary position that people are entitled to. We should have a say over who it is”, the MP added.

The anti-monarchy group Republic believes that the queen and her family cost British taxpayers five times more than what has been revealed.

Republic said it costs taxpayers more than £200 million each year to support Queen Elizabeth II and the rest of her extended family.

That is far more than the official figures released by the palace, which show the royals cost taxpayers just under £40 million per year.

The figures are based on the cost of providing security protection for the extended royal family, the cost of royal visits to other countries and throughout Britain, and the income produced by vast tracts of lands and business enterprises held by the royals.
