‘Anti-Syria extremists threaten region’

Speaking to the Institute for National Security Studies, a Tel Aviv think tank, on Monday, Gantz said the Middle East could “lose its stability” with possible fall of Assad and a takeover by jihadist elements.

He referred to the contentions by some Israeli obverses who describe Syria as the new and local Afghanistan and warned that strategic weapons in Syria could fall into the wrong hands.

The official warned that the war on Syria could bring about a “chaos” that will spill over into Israel.

Clashes between Syrian forces and foreign-sponsored militants have spiked dramatically in the Golan Heights over the recent weeks.

Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it in 1981, in a move never recognized by the international community.

Over the past two years during the ongoing Syrian crisis, Israeli military forces have, in separate occasions, fired artillery shells into the Syrian side of the Golan Heights in response to sporadic shootings by unidentified elements.

The al-Nusra Front, which has pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda, has been behind many of the deadly bombings targeting both civilians and government institutions across Syria since the beginning of violence in March 2011.

While al-Qaeda-linked groups have been listed as terrorist entities under sanctions by the United Nations, militants in Syria, including those belonging to the al-Nusra Front have been receiving all forms of support from the West.
