Arab League to Israel: Stop ‘massacres’

In a statement on Saturday, the Arab bloc condemned Tel Aviv’s fresh airstrikes on Gaza.

The Arab League urged the international community to “take a firm stance to dissuade Israel from its continued massacres and violations of the rights of the Palestinian people.”

It added that “Israel bears the responsibility, as an occupying force, to end the illegitimate blockade on Gaza and to protect the Palestinian people.”

The recent attacks have left at least 16 Palestinian dead and 30 more people injured since Friday.

Israeli Minister of Military Affairs Ehud Barak said that Tel Aviv’s forces will continue to pound the besieged coastal strip.

The Israeli military frequently bombs the Gaza Strip, saying the actions are being conducted for defensive purposes. However, disproportionate force is always used, in violation of international law, and civilians are often killed or injured.

Gaza has been blockaded since 2007, a situation which has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.
