Asus Memo Pad 7-inch Android tablet now available in U.S. for $149

If you can’t beat the Google Nexus 7 on features — and you probably can’t at its price point — then you better offer a cheaper alternative to compel buyers to grab your Android 7-inch tablet. Such is the case with the new Asus Memo Pad, which was announced back in January and is now showing up for sale at online retailers like B&H Photo.

You won’t get the sharper display (1,280×800) of the Nexus 7 with the Memo Pad, which tops out at 1,024×600 screen resolution. The other specs are likewise adequate, if not inspiring: a 1GHz VIA WM8950 processor with Mali-400 graphics, 16GB of storage, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. You also get a microSD slot for additional storage, something that the Nexus 7 does not currently offer.

I say “currently” because Google is apparently working on the next-generation Nexus 7, which could feature a new processor and, more importantly to the Memo Pad, a potential $150 price point. In essence, Google could crush the 7-inch Android tablet market with such an aggressive pricing strategy, forcing companies like Asus to introduce even lower-priced models (at ever-slimmer profit margins) to have any chance of competing.

But that could be down the line. In the meantime, does the $149 Memo Pad have what it takes to be a success? Let us know your thoughts in the Talkback section below.
