If the Australian Labor government was hoping that it would receive a Christmas present in the form of a resolution to the stalemate over off-shore processing of asylum seekers who arrive by boat then less than two days out from Christmas it was left disappointed.
The Labor administration had finally given into demands from the Opposition that it meet only if the Government had a proposal in writing — the government did this — and was even shifting over its previous refusal to include a number of Pacific nations in the scheme.
In a meeting in Sydney that went for several hours — the two parties emerged.
And as Michael Cavanagh reports there was no resolution — although there is agreement to hold further talks — Immigration Minister Chris Bowen conceded there are sticking points.
