Thousands of people have gathered in the Australian city of Sydney for a march in support of asylum seekers amid reports of rights violations at the government’s offshore detention centers, Press TV reports.
Politicians, activists and media figures were among the thousands of demonstrators who attended the annual Walk Together event on Saturday.
Australians rallied to show their support for the plight of the asylum seekers in detention camps outside the country and voice concern about the growing threat of Islamophobia at home.
“It’s time for an Australia that offers fairness and human rights to every person. It’s time to recognize that [regardless of] who you are, where you come from or how you arrived here, you’re a person that deserves to be treated with dignity and respect,” said Brad Chilcott, a member of Welcome to Australia refugee support group.
The march was aimed at raising awareness of Canberra’s tough policy on asylum seekers.
Over the past several years, thousands of people seeking asylum in Australia have been held on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean.
New UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Zeid al-Hussein has accused Australia of violating the rights of illegal migrants.
“We’ve got to counteract that, send a message to the whole community that Australia is the best country in the world for one reason and that’s because we’ve got people from all around the world living together in harmony and walking together, which is what we did today,” Australian MP, Jason Clare, said during the Walk Together event.
The Walk Together event coincided with the National Mosque Day, with Muslims and Christians marching together in a public act of solidarity.
