Bangladesh opposition leader has called on people to march to the capital, Dhaka, at the weekend ahead of the upcoming general election in the country.
Khaleda Zia, the leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), asked people on Tuesday to “march to Dhaka on December 29,” to “say ‘no’ to these farcical elections and to say ‘yes’ to democracy.”
“Wherever you are, carry a red and green national flag and march to Dhaka. We call this a march for democracy,” said Zia, the country’s former prime minister.
The call came as more than 100 people have died in clashes between protesters and security forces since October, when the opposition party launched demonstrations aimed at forcing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down before January 5 election.
Zia also asked people to form “protest committees” in every village to halt the vote.
The government has said that it would go ahead with the election despite the opposition parties’ boycott of the vote.
The United States and the European Union have announced that they would not send any election observers to Bangladesh, questioning the vote as the winners of half of the parliament seats have already been declared as they were uncontested.
Therefore, Hasina’s Awami League government could form an administration even before the poll as the party and its allies have secured 154 seats.
The BNP and its 17 allies described the victory “the worst scandal in the country’s election history.”
This comes while Zia also described the elections as “a shameless selection.”
The BNP has refused to name candidates for the January election, saying the vote under Hasina will be rigged.
