Russian President Valdimir Putin has criticized the United States and the European Union for imposing sanctions against Russia and his inner circle, calling the move a “systemic mistake”.
“The Americans made a systemic mistake by believing that I have personal business interests because of ties to people they put on their sanctions list,” Putin said in an interview with Russian News Agency TASS held on November 14 and published on Sunday.
The Russian leader said that the sanctions only serve to unite Russians against the West, adding that the Russian leadership is not influenced by any businesses interests.
Putin further noted he would never renounce his friends due to the sanctions, imposed based on wrong information.
“Look, they are friends of Putin, they need to be punished and then they will revolt and there will be mutiny. But nothing of the sort is happening,” Putin said.
The United States and the European Union have imposed a series of sanctions against Russian and pro-Russia figures in recent months as they accuse Russia of destabilizing Ukraine. However, Moscow rejects the accusation.
Some of the Russians sanctioned are Putin’s associates. The individuals include Arkady Rotenberg, a major shareholder of the civil engineering company Giprotransmost, Yuri Kovalchuk, the co-founder of the Ozero Dacha — a cooperative society that brings together powerful individuals around Putin — and Nikolai Shamalov, who is also a co-founder of Ozero Dacha.
Putin also slammed western governments for their recent sour relations with Russia over Ukraine crisis, saying, “As soon as Russia rises and declares it has the right to defend its foreign interests, relations with it and its leaders immediately change.”
Deadly clashes between pro-Russian protesters and Ukrainian army forces in the country’s eastern region escalated in April when Kiev launched military operations to crackdown on pro-Russia protests.
