According to the Belgian prosecutor’s office on Friday, the investigation also led to the haul of chemicals used for the production of Ecstasy pills.
“It is the biggest such bust ever in Belgium and one of the largest in Europe,” spokeswoman for the Belgian prosecutor’s office, Wenke Roggen, said.
This comes after some 30 raids were carried out in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Poland.
A total of 11 people, part of an international criminal gang, were also arrested in the European countries and charged with possession, production, and trafficking of drugs.
“We found a total of 600 kg (1,300 lb) of chemical products and materials. You can make 1.5 million pills with 25 kg. Imagine what they could make with 600 kg!” Roggen added.
According to reports, the group included Belgian, Polish, and Turkish nationals.
About 1,000 kilograms of MDMA and 18.5 tons of Ecstasy precursor, safrole, were among the products seized by authorities.
Two laboratories and warehouses were reportedly used to manufacture the drugs.
A majority of the products were found in a garage located in suburban Brussels and in a farmland near the city of Chimay.
Material was also discovered in unknown locations in the Netherlands.
“It is a shock that our region was at the center of such an important production of illegal products,” Chimay Mayor Francoise Fassieux said, adding that authorities had to evacuate some people during the process.
