“We are skeptical as the German government when it comes to delivering weapons because we are concerned that weapons could fall into the wrong, namely extremist, hands,” said Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Saturday.
He made the remarks on the sidelines of the so-called “Friends of Syria” group’s meeting in the Turkish city of Istanbul.
“But it is a matter that must now be discussed in the European Union,” Westerwelle added.
The meeting was also joined by figures from Syria’s opposition bloc, known as the National Coalition, who expressed frustration with their foreign supporters after they failed to reach an agreement to provide weapons to militants in the Arab state.
Syria’s opposition group had earlier said it hoped the Istanbul meeting would agree to arm its forces fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
However, the 11-nation Friends of Syria group, including the US, and European and Arab nations, has reportedly reached a deadlock in their anti-Syria efforts.
A senior Syrian opposition coalition figure confirmed that some countries are already transferring weapons to foreign-backed militants in the crisis-hit country.
However, he also warned that the Istanbul meeting would be the last one the opposition bloc attends in case its foreign backers fail to agree on supplying weapons to militants.
Another top opposition figure also said the bloc’s foreign sponsors cannot ask them for anything regarding the future of Syria.
He further referred to their foreign supporters, saying that after two years of ongoing crisis in Syria, the opposition’s foreign supporters want guarantees from the coalition now.
Countries such as Germany and Austria are opposed to lifting an arms embargo on Syria, which will remain in place until early June.
However, the UK and France have pushed for easing the ban, saying that arming anti-Damascus militants would be the only way to end nearly two years of ongoing conflict in Syria.
