Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proceeds with the threat of a nuclear Iran “in order to divert attention from the country’s socioeconomic problems,” the new Kadima leader and former Israeli minister for military affairs, Shaul Mofaz, told Israel’s Channel 2 in a Thursday interview.
“It is more than political spin. He wants to present himself as the defender of Israel. All the evaluators believe there is more time. Iran is still not a nuclear country. The US is leading the effort against Iran, and it has to stay that way,” he said, according to a Jerusalem Post report.
Mofaz noted that he did not believe Netanyahu could handle such an issue, charging that the premier was “irresponsibly dealing with the matter too publicly when it should be handled behind the scenes.”
The United States and the Israeli regime have repeatedly threatened Iran with military action if the country does not halt its civilian nuclear program. Along with their European allies, the duo have repeatedly accused Iran of seeking military objectives in its nuclear energy program without pointing to any verifiable evidence.
Iran has persistently rejected such allegations, vowing a crushing response to any military strike against the country, which would lead to consequences far beyond the immediate region.
Moreover, in an address on the occasion of Nowruz (Iranian New Year) on March 20, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei reiterated that the Iranian nation will retaliate in kind to any possible attack against the country by the US or the Israeli regime.
“We do not possess a nuclear weapon and we will not build one, but we will defend ourselves against any aggression, whether by the US or the Zionist regime, at the same level,” the Leader said.
Meanwhile, Mofaz also cautioned against the “disastrous” consequences of a premature military operation against Iran.
“Israel must have all its options open and that a military solution should be the last resort,” he pointed out.
“If God forbid, when all the arrows are out of the quiver and the sword is on our necks and the US isn’t doing the deed, the last option is a military operation,” Mofaz opined.
