The blast took place on Friday and was apparently aimed at a senior Pakistani police commander, an unnamed security official said, AFP reported.
Six people were killed on the spot and six others succumbed to the injuries at the hospital.
Three members of security forces and two women were among the dead.
The official said that Abdul Majeed Marwat, commander of the paramilitary Frontier Constabulary for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, was hurt in the attack and taken to a military hospital.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since October 2001, when Pakistan joined an alliance with the United States in its so-called war on terror.
Since late 2009, there has been a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan and thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
