Blast kills 4 Afghan police personnel

Mohammad Fahim, the governor of the province’s Garmsir district, told Press TV that the victims were killed on Thursday evening when the assailant tried to enter the checkpoint in the district.

Fahim added that the fatalities included a police commander and said seven others had also been wounded in the blast.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi said the militants claimed responsibility for the assault, alleging that a higher number of Afghan policemen had been killed and wounded in the act of violence.

Insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan, despite the presence of some 130,000 US-led forces in the war-torn country.

The UN announced on February 4 that 2011 was the deadliest year on record for Afghan civilians. The death toll rose eight percent compared to the year before and was roughly double the figure for 2007.

Roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices (IED) are by far the most lethal weapons, the Taliban militants use against the Afghan forces, foreign troops, and civilians.

The homemade explosives brought about half of the roughly 1,500 civilian deaths in the first six months of last year, according to the United Nations.
