A COUPLE who used the false promise of Wiggles concert tickets to lure a child, 8, into a sexual encounter committed truly reprehensible crimes, a judge says.
District Court Judge Paul Slattery today jailed a South Australian man, 32, for 13 years and a woman, 22, for nine years over a raft of sex crimes, drugs and weapons charges.
He also jailed them for both possessing child pornography and producing some of their own, having filmed their abuse of the girl.
“I regard this offending as particularly serious… it is at the most serious end of the scale of offending,” he said.
“This was a gross abuse of the trust given to you by (the girl’s) family (and) has caused them great distress.
“It will have ongoing effects on the victim for the rest of her life… your whole conduct was reprehensible.”
The couple, who cannot be named, admitted sexually abusing the girl in April 2012.
They confessed to some of the other charges, and were found guilty of the drugs charges at trial.
In sentencing, Judge Slattery said the couple used SMS text messages to craft a scheme to obtain the girl from her family.
“You spoke to the mother of the victim and purported to have a spare ticket to a Wiggles concert,” he said.
“(But) you had purchases skirts, tops and fishnet stockings that the child was to wear.
“You had also purchased shoes and jewellery in an attempt to bribe the child into silence.”
He said the couple did not return the girl at the pre-arranged time and instead kept her overnight, ignoring the mother’s frantic calls and messages.
“Upon her return home, the girl told her mother there was no concert and made the first complaint of sexual abuse,” he said.
Judge Slattery jailed the man for 13 years and 8 months, and ordered his existing non-parole period – for unconnected offending – be extended by 8 1/2 years.
He jailed the woman for nine years, and ordered she serve a five-year non-parole period.
