Many people have reportedly been killed in a fresh attack by Boko Haram Takfiri militants on a town in northeastern Nigeria.
According to eyewitnesses, the militants shot dead civilians who tried to surrender, threw explosives into residential homes and burnt the main market in Damboa, 85 kilometers (53 miles) from the Borno state capital of Maiduguri before dawn Friday.
“They killed many people. Women and children fled into the bush,” an official with the Damboa local government said on condition of anonymity, adding, “Those who could not flee surrendered and were killed by the insurgents.”
The development comes two weeks after Nigeria’s Director of Defense Information Major General Chris Olukolade said in a statement that some 53 Boko Haram Takfiris had been killed after they engaged in a gun battle with Nigerian forces in the town of Damboa.
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has sought parliament’s approval to borrow USD 1 billion from abroad to help fight against the Takfiri militants operating in the African country.
Boko Haram has recently escalated its campaign of terror by attacking many villages in Nigeria’s northeast, burning homes and killing residents.
Boko Haram — whose name means “Western education is forbidden” — says its goal is to overthrow the Nigerian government.
It has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly gun and bomb attacks in various parts of Nigeria since 2009.
