The bomb, which contained 60 kilograms of homemade explosive, was left inside a vehicle abandoned in a car park on Victoria Street near the Northern Ireland Court Service and Musgrave police station, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said.
Police said a number of masked men hijacked the car before placing a device inside it and told the driver to take it to the Victoria Square.
“At around 11:15 p.m., as Ammunition Technical Officer prepared to examine the car, the device partially exploded,” a PSNI spokesperson said on Monday.
People in the nearby Victoria Square shopping centre, cinema and apartment block were told to evacuate the area before the explosion and were offered shelter in the Ulster Hall.
There were no reports of injuries.
The device was the latest in a series found in various parts of Belfast over the last two weeks.
Earlier on Sunday, a small bomb was also defused by the PSNI in a residential area of north Belfasfat.
