“When I looked outside my window, I could clearly see two people (the Tsarnaev
brothers) taking cover behind an SUV and engaging in gunfire.
“After witnessing shots being fired I promptly ran up the stairs to my 3rd
floorbedroom to distance myself a little further away from the gunfire. As I
ran into my room, overwhelmed by shock, adrenaline, and curiosity, I jumped
onto my bed to stay below the windows but also have a clear view at the
shooters and photograph the event.”

In a remarkable series of images taken with his iPhone, he captures the drama
of the shoot-out, the getaway and the police search of the area.
After the gun battle, Mr Kitzenberg and his friends realised how close they
had come to death. One picture shows a bullet-hole that had come straight
through the wall of the house and pierced the chair at the desk of his
room-mate; another one the shot-out windows of a car parked in their
driveway.

Mr Kitzenberg later reflected on how fortunate he and his room-mates had been
to survive unharmed. “These kind of horrifying events make you realize how
precious life really is and the need to cherish every moment you have,” he
wrote.
“You quickly reflect on the people that surround you and how important those
relationships are in your life. I know I am truly blessed to have my health
and safety after this horrible event and am thankful for every person that
has touched my life. Thank you to all of my family, friends, and the
incrediblenumber of people who reached out with love and support.
“Truly blessed, Kitz.”
Dzhokhar
Tsarnaev meanwhile has reportedly told police his older brother was
the driving force behind the attacks that killed three and wounded more than
200.
A US government source told CNN that Dzhokhar told authorities that Tamerlan
organised the plot beacuse he wanted to defend Islam from attack.
Two US officials have also said that the brothers appear to have acted alone
and were motivated by a radical brand of Islam.
The officials said preliminary evidence from Tsarnaev’s interrogation
suggested the brothers were motivated by religious extremism but were
apparently not involved with Islamic terrorist organisations.
