British ambassador makes appearance in Afghan TV comedy

often predatory bureaucracy in what is considered one of the most

corrupt countries in the world.

Sir William plays an ambassador from “Borland”, which the

corrupt minister hopes will provide funding for his department.

Sir William, a Scot, plays himself in a scene where he is greeted by a
bumbling minister wearing a sporran round his neck.

He told the Daily Telegraph: “I did this because I think good

satire is an important aspect of any political system; if you can

learn to laugh at yourself, you know you have a robust system that is

responsive to its people.

“I also wanted to show to the Afghan people that the British

Ambassador is just another human being. And I also wanted to prove my

acting skills.’

Sir William, who is leaving Kabul this weekend and retiring from the

Foreign Office, warned earlier this month that British aid would be at

risk if Hamid Karzai’s administration did not do more to clean up the

government.
