Sir William plays an ambassador from “Borland”, which the
corrupt minister hopes will provide funding for his department.
Sir William, a Scot, plays himself in a scene where he is greeted by a
bumbling minister wearing a sporran round his neck.
He told the Daily Telegraph: “I did this because I think good
satire is an important aspect of any political system; if you can
learn to laugh at yourself, you know you have a robust system that is
responsive to its people.
“I also wanted to show to the Afghan people that the British
Ambassador is just another human being. And I also wanted to prove my
acting skills.’
Sir William, who is leaving Kabul this weekend and retiring from the
Foreign Office, warned earlier this month that British aid would be at
risk if Hamid Karzai’s administration did not do more to clean up the
government.
