British fugitive charged with weapons violation

OZARK, Mo. (AP) — A British armored car driver suspected of stealing a fortune worth $1.5 million in 1993 has been charged in Missouri with a weapons violation.

Edward John Maher, also known as Michael Maher, was taken into custody Wednesday in Ozark after authorities identified him as the man believed to have driven off with the money in Suffolk, England.

Prosecutors say Maher is charged with being an illegal immigrant in possession of weapons. The weapons were found at his apartment and in a storage locker.

British authorities say Maher drove off with the money while a fellow security guard was making a delivery to a Lloyds Bank branch. Then he disappeared.
