A British ISIL terrorist, believed to be responsible for the beheading of Western hostages, has reportedly been injured in a US-led coalition airstrike in Iraq.
Britain’s Foreign Office confirmed on Saturday that it had received reports that the masked executioner, also known as Jihadi John, sustained injuries in the airstrike that targeted a meeting of ISIL leaders in a town in western Iraq close to the Syrian border last week.
According to the UK newspaper Mail, the injured militant has been transferred for treatment to a hospital in the city of Deir al-Zour, eastern Syria.
Jihadi John has been blamed for the execution of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and British aid workers David Haines and Allan Henning.
Citing a nurse who treated some of those wounded in the attack in the hospital, the Mail said that the name of the militant was on the injured list, referring to him as the “one who slaughtered the journalists.”
British intelligence sources say there are around 500 British militants fighting for ISIL in Syria and Iraq.
The ISIL terrorists currently control large areas of Iraq. The group sent its militants into Iraq in June, seizing large parts of land straddling the border between Syria and Iraq.
