A new report suggests that serving British police officers in the UK have been guilty of committing nearly 200 crimes over the past three years.
According to a report by The Independent, British police officers across the country have committed crimes, including sexual assault, possession of cocaine, the use of excessive force, and lying on crime reports related to rape cases.
The report also shows officers being involved in offenses such as being in possession of child pornography, running a brothel, and selling weapons.
Over the past three years, at least 179 crimes have reportedly been committed by police officers in the UK.
Brian Paddick, former deputy commissioner of Britain’s largest force, the Metropolitan Police, has described the figure as “very worrying.”
The new report also suggests that every year, dozens of officers have been caught speeding and driving under the influence. Many of these offences have only been met with a written warning.
The Met, however, reinstated half of its convicted police officers who had committed crimes such as speeding, dangerous driving, and fraud.
A number of its officers who had carried out crimes or offenses were left unpunished after they resigned.
This comes days after Chief Inspector of Constabulary for England and Wales Tom Winsor said some police officers had manipulated crime statistics in order to draw a more positive picture of their work.
