The Central Criminal Court of England and Wales, known as the Old Bailey, heard on Monday that Brooks plotted with her husband and security staff to hide evidence of wrongdoing in the now-closed News of the World tabloid from the police investigating phone hacking.
The jury was told that some items were removed from the couple’s Oxfordshire home before being searched by officers. The material was later hidden near bins at the couple’s London flat, but it was found by a cleaner and handed to police.
The cover-up allegedly happened on July 17, 2011, the day when Brooks was arrested over misconduct at the News of the World, owned by media mogul Rupert Murdoch.
During the trial, Brooks and her personal assistant were also accused of trying to conceal boxes containing notebooks from the tabloid’s archive in Enfield on July 8, 2011.
Prosecutor Andrew Edis QC said there was “a course of justice in existence which could be perverted by hiding evidence. Hiding evidence was not acceptable at any time that year, but the atmosphere, we would suggest, became even more fevered as time went on”.
The criminal trial over Britain’s phone hacking scandal, which is expected to last more than five months, started last week in London.
More than a hundred people have been arrested since 2011, when phone hacking revelations emerged at the News of the World.
Journalists at British newspapers are accused of hacking into the phones of celebrities, politicians, lawmakers, crime victims, royalty and other figures in the news.
