They had erected metal barriers a block away from the embassy, in the Recoleta
neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, in anticipation of the violence, but these
were charged down as activists threw gun-propelled Molotov bombs, stones and
pepper spray at officers.
Police, who managed to push the protesters back with riot shields, then used
tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon in a street battle lasting 30
minutes on Avenida Pueyrredón, one of the main avenues through Buenos Aires
that was shut off to the public during the chaos.
Activists graffitied buildings around the embassy with slogans slurring David
Cameron and waved placards demanding the handover of the Falklands to
Argentina.
It was the third march on the British embassy in as many months. In February,
a group of protesters burned the Union Jack there. Weeks later – as the
diplomatic row between Argentina and the UK over the disputed archipelago
intensified – more than 100 militants held a rally at the embassy calling
for the Argentine government to break off relations with Britain.
