Police said Tuesday that they apprehended 22-year-old Carlito Montoya, the suspect involved in a New Year’s Eve shootout at the Sports Corner Cafe in the Old Sacramento area where people gathered to watch fireworks.
A male employee in his 20s, who tried to break up the fight, and a 35-year-old man died at the scene. A security guard, a 30-year-old woman and the gunman were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening gun wounds.
There have been several deadly shootings across the United States over the past few weeks, putting the issue of lax gun control laws back in the spotlight.
On December 14, 2012, a total of 27 people, including the gunman who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, were killed at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown in the US state of Connecticut. The assailant had killed his mother earlier that day.
In a shooting incident a week later, four people, including the shooter, were killed in the state of Pennsylvania. A number of police officers were also injured during the exchange of fire.
In another incident on December 28, 2012, a gunman shot and injured three police officers at the Gloucester Township Police Department in New Jersey. The gunman, who was reportedly a prisoner at the Gloucester Township station, was shot and killed by the officers.
More than 100,000 Americans have signed an online petition to the White House, dubbed “We the People,” asking the President Barack Obama’s administration for a renewed national debate on gun control.
