NOMINATIONS have opened for the 2014 Australian of the Year awards.
National Australian Day Council chairman Adam Gilchrist is encouraging people to nominate inspiring individuals for the Australian of the Year, Young Australian, Senior Australian and local hero gongs.
He told a ceremony at Old Parliament House in Canberra on Friday there were thousands of people doing amazing things in all fields of endeavour and the council needed help to find them.
2013 Australian of the Year Ita Buttrose said the honour had turned her world “upside down” and made her schedule very busy.
Humble volunteers who are “beavering away”, not expecting any acknowledgement, should be dobbed in, she said.
“The entire country would screech to a halt if our volunteers, said ‘Right, everybody out,” she said.
“They are the most amazing people and they are unsung heroes.”
