The normally fun boardwalk at Venice Beach, Calif. turned deadly on the evening of August 3 when a young man’s car “screeched across a sidewalk and straight into a crowd.” One person died in the chaos. Eleven more were injured as those on the boardwalk watched the driver and his car speed away from the scene.

According to ABC News:
Security video shows the man parking his black car alongside the seaside boardwalk as the sun sank, surveying the idyllic scene for several minutes before getting back into the car and speeding into the crowd.
It shows hundreds of people walking lazily or sitting at cafes before the black car suddenly appears and sends them scrambling wildly.
Witnesses at the scene described the horrific aftermath of the crash, saying that people were stumbling around, bleeding, confused, and screaming. “It was blocks and blocks of people just strewn across the sidewalk.”
Twelve people were injured in all. Ten were taken to the hospital where one person died a few hours later.
One person remains in critical condition. Two more are listed as being in serious condition.
The suspected driver of the car that careened out of control into the crowd sped away from the crash initially, but turned himself in to the neighboring Santa Monica police about an hour after the crash.
Police found the car involved in the crash, but are still trying to determine whether or not the young man that turned himself in is indeed the driver. Currently, police are only describing the man as a person of interest.
Venice Beach is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, drawing as many as 150,000 people to the area on weekends during the summer.
The 1.5-mile ribbon of asphalt that runs along the sand a few hundred yards from the ocean is home to galleries, restaurants, tattoo shops, skateboard parks and the famous outdoor weight room known as Muscle Beach.
