Foreign Minister Bob Carr says he was wrong to threaten sanctions against Papua New Guinea.
Senator Carr said last week any failure by PNG to hold its planned mid-year elections would be a “shocking model” for the Pacific and could result in sanctions.
Senator Carr on Wednesday said his choice of language was wrong.
“It was a mistake and I’ve learned a lesson,” he told ABC Television on Wednesday.
PNG High Commissioner to Australia Charles Lepani said last week for Senator Carr to make such a comment “on his first sojourn” as foreign minister was disappointing.
Senator Carr on Friday issued a statement saying his comments had been “misunderstood and used out of context”.
