A parliament spokesman on Sunday said military spending will rise by more than eleven percent to some 110 billion dollars in 2012.
The figure was contained in a budgetary report submitted to the National People’s Congress, the parliament’s spokesman Li Zhaoxing told a press conference on the eve of the opening of the forum’s annual session.
The number shows a reduction over last year when China increased defense spending by 12.7 percent.
Li said the world has nothing to fear and the money spent on the People’s Liberation Army paled in comparison with the Pentagon’s outlays.
“We have a large territory and a long coastline but our defense spending is relatively low compared with other major countries,” Li told reporters.
China has had double-digit increases in its military spending over the past decade.
The People’s Liberation Army is the world’s largest with an estimated 2.3 million troops.
