China PM to visit India, Pakistan

On Monday, spokesman Hong Lei said that Li will make the visits at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Pakistani government, Swiss President Ueli Maurer, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel respectively.

Hong did not say how long the Chinese premier would be spending in each of the four countries.

Pointing to the border standoff between China and India, Hong Lei said, “The appropriate resolution of this issue again shows that both sides … are committed to friendly consultation to resolve such problems.”

On May 6, India and China agreed to withdraw troops from a border area in the Himalayas to resolve their territorial dispute that began in April after a group of about 30 Chinese soldiers, backed by helicopters, set several tents on the western rim of the Himalayas.

Last week, India’s Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing and signed an agreement to strengthen bilateral relations.

India and China have had uneasy relations since 1962, when they fought a war in the Himalayan regions of Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.

The two sides have held 15 rounds of talks to resolve their border dispute since 1962. However, they have not reached a resolution to the issue.

China is India’s top trade partner, but the unresolved border issue has affected the relationship. The two sides have already signed two accords to maintain peace in frontier areas.
