Chris Matthews Jokes About Rupert Murdoch Still Going Strong At 81: ‘Is That Good?’

Chris Matthews on Sunday actually joked about whether or not it was good that media mogul Rupert Murdoch is still going strong despite being in his 80s.

Not surprisingly, the panelists on the syndicated Chris Matthews Show also thought this was a hoot (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS: When the Pope leaves this week, the cardinals will get ready to choose his successor, but only cardinals under age 80 can actually vote in the College of Cardinals which brings us to this week’s big question. In today’s world of working longer in life, should we have an age cutoff in all sorts of areas, Howard? Like the Supreme Court.

HOWARD FINEMAN, HUFFINGTON POST: I think it’s something we should consider, but I think the technology of aging is changing, and I think it has to still be on a case by case basis. Somebody like Rupert Murdoch running one of the largest news organizations in the world is in his 80’s and going strong by all accounts.

MATTHEWS: Really. Is that good? [Laughs] Just kidding.

Notice how the Huffington Post’s Howard Fineman and the BBC’s Katty Kay also thought this was hilarious.

Imagine Sean Hannity making such a joke on Fox News about the 88-year-old Jimmy Carter or the 82-year-old Warren Buffett eliciting laughter from his conservative panelists.

Somehow I don’t imagine Matthews, Fineman and Kay thinking that was appropriate.

But such jokes aimed at conservatives.

Bring ’em on!
