Claims of hypocrisy over education funding

The Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Mike Kelly, says university related organisations in the New South Wales south east will need to change their financial practices if the Government’s planned changes to education funding are passed.

Under the proposal, school funding would be boosted by $14.5b over six years, with the Federal Government contributing 65 per cent of the cost, while the States pay the rest.

New South Wales would receive $5b in extra funding.

Doctor Kelly says universities will need to look at other practices to remain financially viable.

“We have increased funding to Universities by fifty per cent since we came into Government,” he said.

“They must look to more sustainable models and examples overseas such as in the United States and Israel where they have moved into a much more effective process of turning their research and development into commercial outcomes.”

But the State Member for Bega, Andrew Constance, has accused the Federal Government of hypocrisy over the funding cuts.

Mr Constance says the Commonwealth has in the past criticised the State Government for their planned education jobs cuts.

But now the Federal funding package for schools will force other people in the education sector out of a job.

He says it is double standards.

“This will have a direct consequence on the access centres at Batemans Bay and Bega,” Mr Constance said.

“Here we have the Commonwealth who have taken pot-shots for months at the State Government for trying to clean up back office bureaucracy, who’ve now turned around and gutted university education which will have a direct consequence for our region in order to pay for their reforms.

“I think there needs to be a huge explanation given by Mike Kelly.”
